- This is my 2008 grand adventure...riding a bicycle with 35 international bikers across Europe, following the Danube River along the Orent Express route through eleven countries. The ride is 4000km over 50 days of which 39 are ride days with camping and 11 are rest days in hotels. Our tour group, TourdAfrique, provides a tour leader that provides directions and transposts our luggage, a mechanic, and a chef who promises gourmet local cuisines. We start out in Paris on June 1 and travel through France to Germany, where we pick up the Danube river. We then follow the Danube through Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Then we ride cross country through Romania, Bulgaria, and finally Turkey, where we finish in Istanbul on July 20.

A Ride through Hell!
We woke up this morning to lions roaring at the adjacent zoo. Dogs barked throughout the night, but I slept reasonably well in my tent.
Again, we were on the road at sunrise to climb over several passes before getting into the flat plains. However, this was Monday morning rush hour traffic over a busy highway that goes to Bucharest. The previous two years this segment had been on a Sunday morning. This road was packed with semis carrying big loads, and they were in a hurry. The highway shoulder varied from a foot to nothing, so one had to share the road with the traffic…scary. For the first 50 km all I did was try to get as close to the edge or the road as possible and watch my mirror for upcoming trucks. Several time I had to bail out in the dirt. No fun! Everyone had tails of “and there I was…” In the end, the staff said today caught them by surprise and was a mistake. Oh well…we asked for an adventure. At least everyone arrived safe.
Tonight we are at a motel, camping, and renting several rooms for showers. After a stressful day, I laid down for a one hour nap, only to have several of my friends set beer bottles around me and take a compromising picture. This is, unfortunately, published on Terry’s blog: terrysspokereport.blogspot.com
