About Me

Las Vegas, NV, United States
This is my 2008 grand adventure...riding a bicycle with 35 international bikers across Europe, following the Danube River along the Orent Express route through eleven countries. The ride is 4000km over 50 days of which 39 are ride days with camping and 11 are rest days in hotels. Our tour group, TourdAfrique, provides a tour leader that provides directions and transposts our luggage, a mechanic, and a chef who promises gourmet local cuisines. We start out in Paris on June 1 and travel through France to Germany, where we pick up the Danube river. We then follow the Danube through Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Then we ride cross country through Romania, Bulgaria, and finally Turkey, where we finish in Istanbul on July 20.

Chaumont Rest Day, Day 4, June 4

This was a welcome rest day to get our laundry dry and explore a medieval town. It is foggy today, so we had to find a laundry to dry our cloths. The forecast is for showers and cool temps the next four days and then warm dry weather. I am not looking forward to four more wet days, but you appreciate the dry weather all the more. We have been warned that the second half of the trip will be hot.

Internet cafes are hard to find in the small French towns. This McDonalds is the best deal yet…buy a cup of coffee and get unlimited internet. The only commercial internet we found charged $6 an hour and you had to use the French keyboard…really slow.

Tonight we have reservations in a small French restaurant and we move on tomorrow. So far the body is holding up well.

I'm really enjoying riding along with you, especially now that because of some plantar fascitis I'm riding Cindy's bike for exercise. I can't imagine what your butt feels like. Eat some bread, butter, sausison and cheese for me!

Love,

Herve

Hey Jim, happy travels! I'll be really interested to hear your comparison of long-distance traveling doing the camping thing compared to the hotel stays we had.

I've toyed with the Istanbul to Bejing ride. So far the wife is not too keen on the idea! But before I'd even consider it I'd want to know what you both think of the company putting this trip on. I'll be following along with much interest!

BTW, Gil's video just showed up. It's fabulous! Something to look forward to when you get back.

Just took a nice ride around BC this morning. Was thinking how nice it would be to have a nice road bike when someone on one went by me like I was going backwards. Now I know I need one. I'll need some advise from someone experienced. Know anyone who fits the bill?

Keep on,

Herve
