Let the Adventure Begin

About Me

Las Vegas, NV, United States
This is my 2008 grand adventure...riding a bicycle with 35 international bikers across Europe, following the Danube River along the Orent Express route through eleven countries. The ride is 4000km over 50 days of which 39 are ride days with camping and 11 are rest days in hotels. Our tour group, TourdAfrique, provides a tour leader that provides directions and transposts our luggage, a mechanic, and a chef who promises gourmet local cuisines. We start out in Paris on June 1 and travel through France to Germany, where we pick up the Danube river. We then follow the Danube through Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Then we ride cross country through Romania, Bulgaria, and finally Turkey, where we finish in Istanbul on July 20.

June 13 Rest Day

Everyone welcomes this rest day in hot and windy Champaign, IL. Tomorrow we head out to Indiana, where the forecast is for more hot headwinds. Ugh! We are starting to look toward Boston...two weeks to go.

A quick update on health. I feel like I am almost over my chest and head cold; however, I may have passed it on to Dr Carmen, who is also suffering from acute saddle sores. Our tour director, Tracy, fractured a finger last week in the wind storm, when a van door slammed on her hand. Ray, who did a cartwheel over his handlebars a week ago, has now been diagnosed with a cracked rib. He is really disappointed that he can not ride until the pain subsides. Jerry, our 80 year old rider who hit a dog several weeks ago, took a fall in the shower last week and bruised his hip. He has been out of commission and is hoping to start riding tomorrow. Frank has recovered from his knee injury and root canal, but is still suffering from saddle sores. The rest of us are enduring aches, pains, and general exhaustion, but having fun. Overall, I am truly impressed with the resilience and toughness of this entire group. What is paramount with everyone is to stay healthy and safe the nest two weeks.
