Let the Adventure Begin

About Me

Las Vegas, NV, United States
This is my 2008 grand adventure...riding a bicycle with 35 international bikers across Europe, following the Danube River along the Orent Express route through eleven countries. The ride is 4000km over 50 days of which 39 are ride days with camping and 11 are rest days in hotels. Our tour group, TourdAfrique, provides a tour leader that provides directions and transposts our luggage, a mechanic, and a chef who promises gourmet local cuisines. We start out in Paris on June 1 and travel through France to Germany, where we pick up the Danube river. We then follow the Danube through Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Then we ride cross country through Romania, Bulgaria, and finally Turkey, where we finish in Istanbul on July 20.

July 4, Baile Herculane Rest Day

Happy Independence Day from Hercules Bath!

Today we are in a resort spa with hot springs baths. The town is located in a stunning valley that looks a lot like Yosemite. There are a dozen large hotel resorts that have been here for most of a hundred years, and they look like old palaces. However, on closer inspection, many are abandoned and falling apart. The word from Sebastian, our Romanian guide, is that the communists leaders took some of the hotels and kept the profits for themselves until the places fell apart and had to close, or the property is in court to assign the rightful owner. Our conclusion is that in 10 years this should be a world class resort with MacDonald’s and casinos.

Prices are dirt cheap with only Romanians visiting. Here, vendors are selling a two litre bottle of beer for $2 and a kilo of cherries go for $1.50. Massages at the hotel are $14 for an hour. I checked on one earlier and it is hard to get an appointment, because, seemingly, the hotel is disorganized and the staff doesn’t care about working too hard. I did manage to schedule a 25 minute massage that was wonderful on my tight muscles...only cost $7.

This is a fascinating country in slow transition. We can be thankful for what we have on this Independence Day.
