Let the Adventure Begin

About Me

Las Vegas, NV, United States
This is my 2008 grand adventure...riding a bicycle with 35 international bikers across Europe, following the Danube River along the Orent Express route through eleven countries. The ride is 4000km over 50 days of which 39 are ride days with camping and 11 are rest days in hotels. Our tour group, TourdAfrique, provides a tour leader that provides directions and transposts our luggage, a mechanic, and a chef who promises gourmet local cuisines. We start out in Paris on June 1 and travel through France to Germany, where we pick up the Danube river. We then follow the Danube through Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Then we ride cross country through Romania, Bulgaria, and finally Turkey, where we finish in Istanbul on July 20.

June 1 Day 19 Liberal to Dodge City, KS

Yep, we must be in Kansas...rain, wind, lightning, and even hail. This was one of our tougher days at 84 miles, three flats in the group, crossing headwinds, and rain. I fixed one flat for Lisa in a hail storm, and another for myself in a driving rain. The best part of the day was finishing and taking a hot shower. I had flat number five on the road and number six in the motel room.

Along the way we had a great SAG stop at the Dalton Gang Hole in the Wall, where it started to rain. Then we stopped at a country store to wait out a rain shower and I met Slim, a contract cowboy...quite colorful. He thought a bunch of bikers dressed in spandex and riding in the rain on their way to Boston was amazing.

I rode some with Frank, my friend from Salt Lake, who had hurt his knee and had the root canal. His tooth was still bothering him, so I called my dentist sister, Jill, who was able to give Frank a telephone assessment of his tooth ailment. Jill said he had a "hot tooth" and if the antibiotics didn't kick in in another day to move to a stronger prescription. I know this put Frank's mind at ease because Terry has been offering to pull the tooth with some of his bike tools.

Dinner was at a Kansas Tex-Mex restaurant, and was like our Wizard of Oz tour by Dorothy. It took 30 minutes to get chips and drinks, and an hour to get dinner, with everyone starving and grumpy. To top it off, Lisa is on a special diet because of food allergies. She ordered a special meal and of course it came with foods she was allergic to. After a couple of bites she had to jump up and rush off to the hotel to get her allergy meds. There is some concern she may be sick and grounded for three days.

Two of the bikers have decided the rides were just too hard and have left the tour. It was really disappointing to see them leave.

Tomorrow the forecast is for a warm day with light winds. I meet Sandra in Great Bend. Yea!

Stats: 84 miles, 800' climbing, 15.4 mph avg, 20 mph cross/head winds, rain and hail, 57 - 61 deg.
