Another state crossing - eighth - and into Indiana and the Eastern Time Zone!
All the injured rode today, except Dr Carmen, who has my head cold - the rest days have done wonders for everyone.
Last night we were joined by three new bikers, Dave from Connecticut, and Mark and Tracy from Denver. Mark and Tracy ride a tandem bike together. Terry and I had ridden with them for a week last year on the Pacific Coast ride. It was fun reconnecting.
This morning we rode through Champaing Old Town and University of Illinois, which was beautiful. Once we got out of town, Mark and Tracy bolted to the front and cruised at 20+ mph for 20 miles, with ten of us hanging on. Some of us decided to press because the forecast was for mid-90 temps and headwinds. Early morning temps were cool and light winds. After a quick stop the group reformed, and we were rolling into Crawfordsville at noon. As it turned out, the head winds and temps were only moderate, so could have I could have cruised and looked closer at the corn fields.
Today was flag day, and recognition of this, many of us decorated our helmets. Some were quite artistic...a worn out shoe on one, an old seat on another, flowers, animals, etc. Terry and I used Post It colored strips for a porcupine (Terry) and colored flames for me.
Tomorrow is an easy ride to Indianapolis, and a spin around a velodrome.
Stats: 80 miles, 17.4 mph avg, 1100' climbing, 5 - 15 mph head winds, 70 - 85 deg temps.
