There are lots of hills in Missouri! It seemed like every time we crested a hill we could see the road ahead looked like a roller coaster with a big hill to climb at the end. Today was a beautiful cool day where we were either going down a hill or climbing...3000' of it.
The high point was riding together as a group into Maysville, where the town historical society rolled out the red carpet for us and served fresh baked cinnamon buns (the 1000 calorie kind), fruit, and coffee. Their claim to fame for the 1200 person town is that at the turn of the century a town's father had an English relative that biked around the world, and gave the town a replica bike. It was quite a treat, and hearting to see this town is holding it's own, as opposed to most small Midwestern towns that are being boarded up.
Today's ride was fun, but classified as one of the harder ones because of some narrow and rough roads, plus the hills. The winds were moderate, temps 20 deg less than yesterday, and sunny sky's. The country side is a lush green, and even the cows smiled at us as we rode by. I was beat at the end of ride, and am working at beating back the onset of a cold.
Tomorrow's ride to Kirksville promises to be memorable with 2800' of climbing and 148 roller coaster hills.
Stats: 86 miles, 17 mph avg, 3000' climbing, temps 55 - 75 deg, 10 - 20 mph head to cross to tail winds.
