Let the Adventure Begin

About Me

Las Vegas, NV, United States
This is my 2008 grand adventure...riding a bicycle with 35 international bikers across Europe, following the Danube River along the Orent Express route through eleven countries. The ride is 4000km over 50 days of which 39 are ride days with camping and 11 are rest days in hotels. Our tour group, TourdAfrique, provides a tour leader that provides directions and transposts our luggage, a mechanic, and a chef who promises gourmet local cuisines. We start out in Paris on June 1 and travel through France to Germany, where we pick up the Danube river. We then follow the Danube through Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Then we ride cross country through Romania, Bulgaria, and finally Turkey, where we finish in Istanbul on July 20.

June 12 Day 28 Springfield to Champaign, IL

Today was a day of hot head winds. Ugh! We also moved from lush green fields to the mid-West drought area. The grass is brown and corn fields are wilting. We were caked in salt when we arrived.

I seemed to have kicked the head cold and was back to almost 100%, so I ran with the fast group. It was hard work, but we shared the pulling and got into town before the strongest hot winds hit. A bunch of riders had to take the van for part of the ride. I did 87 miles with only one stop..not much time to see the country side...just kept cranking. The forecast is for hot dry days for the next week. Hopefully we'll have favorable winds. Tomorrow is a rest day. Yea! Only one more rest day to go.

Stats: 87 miles, 17 mph avg, 900' climbing, 10 - 20 mph head winds, 70 - 86 deg temps.

Pardon my ignorance - but is the salt from perspiration? If so, that is truly a hot, awful kind of a day. Atta Boy!!! Keep on moving!

Jill,

On a hot day one can loose two pounds of water an hour, and ride for six or more hours. With that perspiration, you loose electrolites, so we have learned to take supplements, including salt. Our cloths show the rings of salt.
