About Me

Las Vegas, NV, United States
This is my 2008 grand adventure...riding a bicycle with 35 international bikers across Europe, following the Danube River along the Orent Express route through eleven countries. The ride is 4000km over 50 days of which 39 are ride days with camping and 11 are rest days in hotels. Our tour group, TourdAfrique, provides a tour leader that provides directions and transposts our luggage, a mechanic, and a chef who promises gourmet local cuisines. We start out in Paris on June 1 and travel through France to Germany, where we pick up the Danube river. We then follow the Danube through Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Then we ride cross country through Romania, Bulgaria, and finally Turkey, where we finish in Istanbul on July 20.

June 4 McPherson to Abilene, KS

Tonight we're in Abilene, the home of Dwight Eisenhower. The ride was 63 miles along country roads, clear skys, warm temps, and headwinds. Today we simply got into groups and ground out the miles with only one 10 minute stop. I must have just zoned out watching the back tire in front of me, or taking my turn pulling a group of nine for a mile. The time just flew by.

The great news is that the three bikers that crashed yesterday all made the ride, though they were sore and a little slower than normal.

Last night, Dr Richard took a poll during dinner on saddle sores. About a dozen people said they were suffering from some significant rearend ailment, and most of these were the women. A conclusion was the state of the art for saddles has not advanced for women as much as men. So far I have avoided this painful affliction.

Stats: 63 miles, 16.4 mph avg, 1100' climbing, 20 mph head winds, temps 65 - 80 deg.

Outstanding blog Jim, I'm in the LVVBC and saw your picture in he newsletter today. It was 108 in Henderson at lunch time! Enjoy the weather, sorry to hear about the head winds. Best of luck, have a clam chowder for me at the finish line!

that's some big country in those pictures you posted. Looks like good biking roads. Lots of road and no stop signs!
