Toto, we must not be in Kansas any more!
After a week of biking 500 miles, we are into Missouri, and we already miss the courteous Kansas drivers and smooth country roads. The bridge over the Missouri River was a two lane antique that was quite rough with strong cross winds. I included a picture looking over my shoulder back into Achison, KS. I also learned to take the lead over the bridges, so bikers behind me have to deal with the irritable drivers we hold up.
The news today was once again the weather. The national weather service called for 35 - 50 mph winds out of the SW, and severe afternoon thunderstorms. We were going NE, so we flew most of the morning. The weather and winds make all the difference in a fast easy day, or slow hard day. Today was an easy 86 miles, and we beat the thunderstorms.
I learned about H-days...hot, hilly, and humid. We arrived soaked in perspiration.
This was our sixth state line crossing, and I faithfully sprinkled Pacific sand at the Missouri sign...let the tail winds continue! We have also left the big western states and will be crossing states every three to four days.
Stats: 86 miles, 18.7 mph avg, 2000' climbing, temps 70 - 85 deg.
